E-mail to Eircom Customer Services

The text of an Email dated July 27th 2001 to a member of the Eircom Customer Services team is reproduced below.
It refers to a false hit-counter reading for this web-site coming from a CGI (Common Gateway Interface) file on an Eircom controlled internet computer.

At the time of writing (July 31st 2001), the hit-counter, or "visitor counter", is reading 372; and for the reasons given below it should be 6797 + 20 + 372: i.e. 7189.

Police reference: P.S. 219/01

Eircom reference (received on July 4th 2001): Case No. 0000868433

Subject: Fw: Hit-counter reset again (on July 18th 2001) ???

Dear Rachael,

Following our telephone conversation of yesterday, it is now my understanding that the Eircom Technical Department are at present looking into the ongoing problem with the hit-counter at my web site, and that somebody from that section will be writing to me within the coming 10 days or so for the purpose of:

a) Explaining to me what this mysterious business is all about;

and,

b) Informing me about the matter of my expenses in connection with attempts to have the problem corrected.

I further understand that the three people I have had earlier contact with through the e-mails below (Ms Doherty, Mr Crawford, and Mr. Higel) no longer work for Eircom.

In case there might be any doubt about it, I wish to make it clear that, apart from the hit-counter problem, I continue to be very happy with all other aspects of the Internet service Eircom are providing me with at the present time.

Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,

W. Finnerty.

Subject: Fw: Hit-counter reset again (on July 18th 2001) ???

Dear Valerie,

The Eircom controlled hit-counter at my site has been interfered with again (in a very obvious way) sometime during the past few days.

I wrote to Steffin Higel last Wednesday about this second round of problems (please see a copy of my e-mail to him below). It seemed (to me) that it was he who eventually managed to have the first set of hit-counter problems corrected. Unfortunately, I have recently been informed that Steffin Higel no longer works for Eircom.

Also, I received a message on my telephone answering machine this morning from a lady named Rachael (who was phoning from Eircom Net). She said she was looking into my complaint about the hit-counter at my site, and (as I understand it) that she expected to have more information for me by this coming Tuesday (or so). It is not clear to me if she knows about the second round of hit-counter problems mentioned here, or not?  As I do not have any contact information for her, it would be much appreciated if you would copy this message to her please.

Sincerely,

William Finnerty.

Subject: Hit-counter reset again???

Dear Steffen,

I noticed this morning that the hit-counter at my Eircom site was reset AGAIN sometime between yesterday evening, and 8 am this morning.

Yesterday morning the counter was reading 6797. I estimate (based on past records) that there would have been 20 visitors before it was re-set sometime during yesterday evening (or early this morning possibly). Consequently, I believe the reading should now be: 6797 plus 20, and plus whatever figure is showing on the hit-counter at the present time.

It would be much appreciated if you could arrange to have the correct reading restored to the hit-counter please.

I have now placed an account of my efforts at dealing with the earlier counter re-setting incident (which happened on June 21st or 22nd last) at the following www address:
http://homepage.eircom.net/~williamfinnerty/hit-counter.htm

I truly hope there is not going to be the same amount of difficulty (and expense) for me - as there was the last time - in having the present problem corrected.

I feel I have to say that I am really puzzled (and more than a little concerned) by the way that someone can apparently STILL interfere with Eircom controlled CGI files with ease; and I cannot help feeling that you may have some kind of a major software security problem at Eircom? If by some chance the changes to the hit-counter at my site are being made lawfully, then I believe I should be told that that is the case: and not left to wonder, and to speculate, as to what might be going on ???

Finally, I feel I should also mention to you that I have recently had major problems with a computer virus: even though I did not (to the very best of knowledge) open ANY virus infected files on any of the computers that I use. I did receive an e-mail with an attachment containing a virus several weeks ago (which appeared to come from a cousin in New Zealand). However, the infected file was detected immediately it arrived, and reported to the person who it appeared to come from. For further information on this matter, please see www page:
http://homepage.eircom.net/~williamfinnerty/anti-virus.htm

Sincerely,

William Finnerty.
