  • On Friday February 14th 2003 French politicians and diplomats at the United Nations meeting in New York tried very hard (and with considerable success) to prevent a major war starting in Iraq.
     
  • On at least one occasion there was loud spontaneous applause for the French effort from people present at the meeting. (Such applause is very unusual at United Nations meetings apparently.)

  • The day after the United Nations meeting (i.e. Saturday February 15th 2003), somewhere in the region of six million people are believed to have taken part in anti-war protest marches all over the world. One million are said to have marched in London: making it the biggest protest march there in living memory.
     
  • The crucially important issue (for democracy) of how many politicians (including UK Prime Minister Mr Tony Blair MP for example) are willing and able to listen effectively to what ordinary citizens try to communicate to them was referred to indirectly in the February 15th 2003 e-mail reproduced below to the French Prime Minister.

"The right of every person to be heard" forms a major part of the law represented by Item 2, Article 41 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.

Are all (or just a few perhaps?) of those who hold high office within the EU aware of this crucially important democratic principle? If so, do they have any form of REAL respect for it: in practical terms?

Partly for reasons connected the looming prospect of war in Iraq, an attempt has recently been made to draw the "right to be heard" principle to the attention of a small selection of people holding high office in the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the European Union itself.

The main question is this: how many such people (including UK Prime Minister Mr Tony Blair MP for example) are willing and able to listen effectively to what ordinary EU citizens try to communicate to them?
